The history of Gin and Tonic is a fascinating story and during the Gin tasting you will discover all about it. Gin-tonic is now one of the most popular drinks in the world. But did you know that it was originally introduced as Gin by British soldiers in the eighteenth century to drink courage? These soldiers called the favourite drink 'Dutch Courage' (Dutch heroism) because it originally came from the Netherlands.
Herbs such as juniper berries were added for medicinal purposes, particularly to treat diseases such as black plague, stomach upset and malaria. Unfortunately, this did not prove as effective as thought. However, quinine, present in Tonic, was proven to contain antibodies to malaria. This led to Sir Winston Churchill's famous statement, "The gin and tonic has saved more Englishmen's lives than all the doctors in the Empire."
The Gin tasting is a great way to learn about the history and delicious flavours of different Gins. Our Gin-Master will guide the tasting and share his knowledge and experiences with you.
